Benguela Mud MPA
West of Saldanha Bay, Western Cape
The least trawled stretch of muddy seabed on the west coast.
Sediment washing down the Orange River provides much of the mud for the muddy habitats that are of limited extent, and critically endangered, on South Africa’s deep continental margin of the west coast. At 72 km2 this is the smallest proposed MPA in the Phakisa MPA network.
